Recognized by national publications and even Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. as a classic American dive bar, Burts Tiki Lounge is a State Street landmark synonymous with SLC punk and Zion-underbelly sleaze (in the best way). With the hundreds of band stickers plastered up front and adjacent tattoo shop, its fairly obvious that this isnt a tiki lounge of the bamboo-and-fruity-drinks stripe. And dont bother asking for Burt, either. Denim-and-leather punks of the old, new and middle schools frequent Burts, as well as rockers, metalheads and the occasional goth, jam-bander and collegiate adventurer looking for a new dive tale to tell. You never know which vintage cartoon oddity or cult-flick obscurity will be playing on the TV screens, and only hearty handful will brave Scottys Pickled Eggs. Music-wise, if its loud, youll hear it at Burts (and throughout the Sears parking lot). Punks bands from across the land make tour stops at the club, and locals are nobody until theyve been heckled there at least once. The calendar also encompasses roots-rock, metal, ska, comedy and the occasional left-field mainstream headliner with a tour bus bigger than the bar.
